WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange's rape case gets murkier
December 8, 2010 at 10:55 PM

Source: www.mid-day.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Are the sexual assault charges against Julian Assange really true or is he being framed? As more details surface, the case gets murkier by the minute. Assange is currently in a London jail cell awaiting deportation to Sweden on charges he sexually assaulted two women there in August. His defenders insist that the charges are fabricated in an attempt to get him to Sweden - perhaps, they hint, because the country has a strong extradition treaty with the US, reports the Christian Science Monitor. However, lawyer Gemma Lindfield, representing the Swedish state, told a London court yesterday that it''s a simple case of credible allegations of rape being made against Assange by two women. A mention from the Swedish police and press reports that Assange failed to use a condom in one instance, and that in another his condom broke, have led to many false claims that having unprotected sex is illegal in Sweden, and that the country has a 'broken condom law.' According to Lindfield, the two women had withdrawn their consent to have sex with Assange either during or immediately before the act. The first woman, 'Miss A' alleges that he coerced her to have sex. He's also charged with refusing to wear a condom, despite being asked to by her. In the case of 'Miss W,' as she was described in court, he's also alleged to have 'sexually exploited' the fact that she was asleep to have sex with her. Article 3 of Sweden's criminal code on sex crimes indi ...

a rare useful analysis amid the mindless claims that wikileaks is somehow phony

Europeans Accused of "Paranoia" Over Fears of US Economic Espionage, Documents Reveal Tom Burghardt, Antifascist Calling, Nov 8 2010 Confidential State Dept documents released by the whistleblowing web site WikiLeaks , revealed that a European Parliamentary vote earlier this year that suspended participation in a US government program that secretly monitored international bank transactions, surprised and angered the Obama administration. In a stunning rebuke of US policies the Feb 2010 memo, "Chancellor Merkel Angered by Lack of German MEP Support for TFTP," 10BERLIN180 provided new evidence that the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program (also known as Swift) is viewed skeptically by the European public and their representatives. Distrust of the Swift program runs deep and its "War on Terror" pedigree is considered little more than a pretext for US spies to carry out economic espionage on behalf of US multinationals. Alarmed over privacy breaches by US firms and criminal acts, such as the illegal US transfer of prisoners on CIA "black flights," aided and abetted by European intelligence agencies, outraged public opinion forced the hand of parliamentarians, who voted overwhelmingly to suspend the program. German opposition to Swift "was particularly damaging" the NYT reported, "because the country was among a handful of allies that, according to a 2006 cable, made up a 'coalition of the constructive' organized to ensure that the Swift ...

United States wants to put Wikileaks back in the bottle – Good luck with that.
December 8, 2010 at 7:26 PM

Source: www.inquisitr.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
In the follow up to WikiLeaks making files available for anyone in the world to mirror Marshall Kirkpatrick from ReadWriteWeb did some checking over on Pirate Bay to see how well the torrents for the WikiLeaks files were doing. Needless to say that as much as the United States government might want to put that genie back in the bottle it is obvious by the numbers that this isn't going to happen. Here's a few of the numbers that Marshall pulled together: There are, as of this writing, 113 different torrents with the words WikiLeaks Cablegate in the title listed At the time of Marshall's post there were 109 people leeching a WikiLeaks Cablegate file and 5801 total seeds The first full archive file was seeded two and a half hours after @WikiLeaks first announce their availability on Twitter 721 people are currently helping seed the first day's archive file. 26 different WikiLeaks Cablegate torrents were uploaded yesterday. And as Marshall also points out – this is just the tip of the iceberg: According to the WikiLeaks.ch site, just 1193 out of the 251,287 total documents included in Cablegate have been released so far. That's less than 0.5% of what's on its way. Try as hard as they might by putting pressure on businesses or governments there is no way that the US government can stop this, but good luck trying. ...

Source: www.ditii.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Twitter says that this week, people are wondering about WikiLeaks, with some asking if Twitter has blocked #WikiLeaks, #cablegate or other related topics from appearing in the list of top Trends. The answer: Absolutely not. In fact, some of these terms, including #WikiLeaks and #cablegate, have previously trended either worldwide or in specific locations. Here's Trends on Twitter are measured: Twitter Trends are automatically generated by an algorithm that attempts to identify topics being talked about more right now than they were previously.[…] Twitter users now send more than 95 million Tweets a day, on just about every topic imaginable. We track of the volume of terms mentioned on Twitter on an ongoing basis. Topics break into the Trends list when the volume of Tweets about that topic at a given moment dramatically increases. Sometimes a topic doesn't break into the Trends list because its popularity isn't as widespread as people believe. And, sometimes, popular terms don't make the Trends list because the velocity of conversation isn't increasing quickly enough, relative to the baseline level of conversation happening on an average day; this's what happened with #WikiLeaks this week. Journalism is not an Attack, Wikileaks is not Warfare
December 8, 2010 at 4:20 PM

Source: firedoglake.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
The printing press is not a weapon of war. (photo: janGlas on Flickr) WikiLeaks is under attack! Journalists and politicians are calling for the criminalization of WikiLeaks , or worse, the assassination of its members. The US government is coercing companies into blocking access to WikiLeaks, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is normally very strong on internet freedom, has been forced to "evolve" her positions . If you're a supporter of WikiLeaks, or even a relatively dispassionate observer, you likely find these actions to be offensive, or even downright criminal. How dare the US move so arrogantly, so aggressively, against WikiLeaks for what seems to be nothing more than the second coming of the Pentagon Papers ? We believe in free speech, in transparency and accountability for our government. It's outrageous that Washington would move so decisively to crush a project like WikiLeaks. But are WikiLeaks' supporters actually feeding this response from the government? In our rush to rationalize and defend WikiLeaks and their actions, have we inadvertently opened the door to attacks by the US government? The answer can be found in how we've chosen to frame the debate so far. [Cont'd] My friend Bob Morris has been studying the writings of Julian Assange closely, and he writes this of Assange's motives: I also think there are whole levels here we aren't seeing, including what Assange is doing. It is however, a classic exampl ...

wikileaks being used to justify an 'internet patriot act'
December 8, 2010 at 4:18 PM

Source: mediamonarchy.blogspot.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
from activist post : Over the weekend, an insightful article by Zen Gardner exposed how WikiLeaks resembles an establishment creation . The article correctly pointed out that the WikiLeaks storyline was conforming nicely to the elite's problem-reaction-solution method, with the solution of more tyranny for our safety. WikiLeaks is being used to bring in the agenda on so many levels, but most importantly by setting the precedent of shutting down websites for politically 'dangerous' content . Gardner writes: After all, if information is now the enemy, we must carefully police any and every aspect of this dangerous medium - all for the safety and protection of 'we the people.' Oh, we'll still have the Internet, just like you can still fly. You'll just have to be on the 'approved' list, screened, stamped, zapped, mugged and molested if you want to get 'on the net.' No biggie. Thanks Julian -- job well done. First, let's be clear, the 250,000 pages of cables amounted to some geopolitical Jerry Springer he-said-she-said nonsense to make countries look petty and stupid. They revealed nothing new that wasn't already known or well suspected. The information simply stoked existing flames by airing geopolitical dirty laundry, nothing more - no secret weapons, no major arms deals, no tactical locations of troops, and no revealing the ID of secret agents, etc . Yet, the government has used its corporate muscle to illegally limit access to WikiL ...

Report: Sarah Palin Under Cyber Attack From Hackers In Support Of WikiLeaks
December 8, 2010 at 1:23 PM

Source: www.mediaite.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
ABC News' Jake Tapper is reporting that Sarah Palin's website and personal credit card information "were cyber-attacked today by WikiLeaks supporters" according to an email received from the former Alaskan governor. Earlier today reports surfaced of hackers from the infamous "Anonymous" group connected to the 4chan message boards attacking major institutions such as Mastercard, ostensibly in retaliation for their treatment of WikiLeaks. Tapper reports in his Political Punch blog : Hackers in London apparently affiliated with "Operation Payback" – a group of supporters of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks – have tried to shut down SarahPac and have disrupted Sarah and Todd Palin's personal credit card accounts. "No wonder others are keeping silent about Assange's antics," Palin emailed. "This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts." Palin has criticized WikiLeaks founder Assange, writing on Facebook that his "past posting of classified documents revealed the identity of more than 100 Afghan sources to the Taliban. Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders?…Assange is not a 'journalist' any more than the 'editor' of al-Qaeda's new English-language magazine Inspire is a 'journalist.' He is an anti-American operative with blood on his hands." This is not the first time that Ms. Palin's personal Internet accounts have been breac ...

While some positive reform steps have been taken, the old guard associated with the culture of impunity continues to resist fundamental change. Most key reforms are yet to be carried out, and the future of the constitutional review process is uncertain. We are employing public and private pressure, engaging broadly with the senior-most levels of the government and other political actors, and reaching out extensively to the Kenyan people, youth, civil society, the media, the private sector, and religious groups. We also laying out incentives for positive action on reforms and supporting significant steps when they are taken. Source: madmikesamerica.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
As each batch of decoded cables and emails are released, covering all nation states and corporate bodies on this planet, I wonder what would happen if emails from/to the Vatican were included? Note: All headers and dates have been removed from these communications to protect the "leakers". Some of the text has been garbled due to the decryption process, as the Vatican uses some very high level encryption. From: His Excellency, The Archbishop of Canterbury (HETAoC) To: His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI (Il Papa) Hi Joe, Wie Gehts? Bloody Hell, you've been doing some travelling, haven't you. Hope you're keeping an eye on those air points, you must really be racking them up. I'm having no end of problems with the minions. Ever since we started talking about a merger between our businesses, the proles have been getting a bit restive. They're going on about some sort of theological claptrap, as if I give a ****. It's amazing really, we've managed to keep them believing for 2000 years. "Don't ask questions, simply have faith" has been really good for both of us. You're so lucky only having blokes to deal with, it's these women priests who are the worst. Nag, nag, nag. Do you know that some of them actually believe in a God? LOL. That hasn't been a requirement in our lot since the 18th century for God's sake (my little joke there). WikiLeaks Hackers Strike Back: Take down MASTERCARD and VISA site

Source: randysright.wordpress.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
A growing list of organizations and individuals that have tangled with WikiLeaks and its detained founder, Julian Assange, have suffered online attacks, in what appears to be an effort by hackers bent on exacting revenge for the document-leaking website. The attacks stepped up Wednesday, a day after Mr. Assange was arrested and denied bail in London in connection with sexual-misconduct accusations in Sweden. A range of organizations, including MasterCard Inc., and the Swedish prosecutor's office, reported technical difficulties with their websites that appear to stem from so-called denial of service attacks, in which computers flood a server to prevent it from displaying a Web page. cont http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703493504576007182352309942.html?mod=WSJ_hp_MIDDLETopStories WikiLeaks Tweeter acct below http://twitter.com/#!/Anon_Operation ...

"Operation: Payback" claims to have shut down Visa website in defense of WikiLeaks
December 8, 2010 at 1:16 PM

Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
At about 1 p.m. Visa.com was unreachable. Users trying to access the website were informed by their browsers that it was unavailable or could not be found, or they timed out. At about the same time, a group of hackers going by the name Anonymous said on Twitter that they were responsible for the shutdown, which they called " Operation: Payback ." Its tweets read: TARGET: WWW.VISA.COM :: FIRE FIRE FIRE!!! WEAPONS http://bit.ly/e6iR3X ::: SET YOUR LOIC TO irc.anonops.net ::: #DDOS #PAYBACK #WikiLeaks And shortly thereafter: http://isitup.org/www.visa.com IT'S DOWN! KEEP FIRING!!! #DDOS #PAYBACK #WikiLeaks The group also took credit for crashing MasterCard's website with an earlier distributed denial of service attack, a tactic hackers use to overload a company's servers with requests for information from its website.  A public relations firm representing Visa said the company was looking into it but did not yet have a comment. Officials at MasterCard were unavilable for comment Wednesday afternoon. Both Visa and MasterCard were apparently struck, by Anonymous and possibly others, because they stopped doing business with WikiLeaks after the website began releasing secret U.S. diplomatic documents on its website. The release of the U.S. diplomatic cables has resulted in political problems and embarrassment for world leaders and a backlash from some companies that had done business with the controversial site. -- Nathan Olivarez-Giles a ...

Government Pressure Led PayPal to Block WikiLeaks
December 8, 2010 at 1:14 PM

Source: www.switched.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
WikiLeaks and its creator Julian Assange have been under intense pressure from every side. The Swedish police want Assange in connection with a sexual assault charge, Amazon booted the site from its servers, the U.S. government (along with many others) have condemned the whistleblower site, and PayPal is preventing the WikiLeaks account from accepting donations. One group in particular seems particularly hell-bent on shutting down the site, and that's the U.S. State Department, which allegedly pressured PayPal to shut down the WikiLeaks account . Osama Bedier, PayPal's VP of platform, mobile and new ventures, said that the company's decision to suspend the account was influenced by the State Department. "We [...] comply with regulations around the world, making sure that we protect our brand," he said at a press conference in Paris, according to the Huffington Post. The statement was meant to clarify the reason for the WikiLeaks blockage that began last week, which was attributed to a non-specific violation of PayPal's Acceptable Use Policy. Some companies who have also taken action against WikiLeaks -- such as MasterCard -- have found themselves on the receiving end of a backlash from hacktivists . When asked about the potential for PayPal to be the target of attacks, Bedier wasn't concerned. It's all part of being a successful company, he said. WikiLeaks' Support For Bradley Manning Hasn't Reached It's Checkbook
December 8, 2010 at 1:14 PM

Source: www.wired.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
WikiLeaks has failed to deliver on a months-old pledge to contribute financially to the defense of Bradley Manning, according to a group raising money for the imprisoned Army private suspected of providing WikiLeaks its most important U.S. releases. A spokesman for the Bradley Manning Support Network said on Wednesday that the group had still not received money that WikiLeaks had pledged in July and was supposed to have released to the group back in September. "As of yesterday afternoon, the money had not arrived," spokesman Jeff Paterson told Threat Level. WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson had said last week at a panel discussion in London that WikiLeaks had contributed "a substantial amount of money," to Manning's defense. But upon learning on Tuesday that the money had actually not been paid yet, Hrafnsson told the Washington Post that there was a misunderstanding and that $20,000 would be distributed to Manning's defense immediately by the non-profit Wau Holland Foundation, which manages the majority of WikiLeaks' donations. "The contribution was informally agreed upon quite some time ago and that was relayed to the defense fund," WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told the Post . "I was under the impression it had been formally authorized as is required by the trustees [of the] Wau Holland Fund. This situation has now been rectified and the payment is being processed now." The figure, however, falls short of the $50,0 ...

Is Twitter Suppressing Discussion Of WikiLeaks?

Ah the irony: social networking sites were heralded as the savior of democracy, transparency, and change — but perhaps that's only the case when the villain is conveniently a U.S. enemy such as Iran. Today, there are growing accusations that Twitter is attempting to suppress the spread of WikiLeaks discussion by removing it from "trending topics" lists. Starting with a volcanic surge in popularity on November 28, the hashtag #WikiLeaks has been white-hot on Twitter. And yet, it hasn't made a blip on Twitter's Trends list, which has been occupied by far less popular topics. Has Twitter caved to anti-WikiLeaks pressure à la PayPal and Mastercard? Wikileaks Founder Assange Gets Famous UK Lawyer

Source: www.headlinerwatch.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
As the world rises to show solidarity with the arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, he seems to have found another help in the form of the famous UK human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson. Robertson today offered his legal services to Mr.Assange who is currently jailed in London. The offer was made after reports came in from Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens who declared that he wasn't being allowed to meet his client in jail. Following this Robertson is said to have curtailed his visit to Australian subcontinent and he is currently joining the legal team aiding Julian Assange. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested on Tuesday on charges of molestation. Following his arrest he was refused bail repeatedly and is now in judicial custody in London till the 14th of December. There have been numerous offers for his bail by eminent perosnalities like film-maker Ken Loach, John Pilger (journalist). Also the wife of ex-Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan,Jemima Khan had offered to aid in getting John a bail. However all their noble intentions and efforts failed as Julian was denied bail on grounds that he lacked a present residential address in UK. The judge said he couldn't risk the chance of Assange fleeing the country after being granted a bail. Legal experts have already clarified that its indeed difficult to obtain a bail in cases of sexual offences, however Assange's lawyer Stephens has made a claim that his client's arrest is m ...

WikiLeaks' Assange Tops 'Person of the Year' Poll
December 8, 2010 at 10:03 AM

Source: blog.youwager.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Source: www.myfoxaustin.com WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange was Tuesday leading an online poll to be named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" — while an online bookmaker painted him as the equivalent of Saddam Hussein in betting terms. In a poll on Time's website, Assange had 298,975 votes — 76,207 ahead of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and more than 160,000 ahead of pop singer Lady Gaga, in second and third places. Other big names in the poll include IT figures Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, who were trailing at 22,164 and 15,933 votes respectively. Being named "Person of the Year" doesn't necessarily make you a public hero — Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin have also been previous winners of the title. But online bookmaker YouWager.com is betting on Time playing it safe this year — saying the odds of Assange appearing on the prestigious cover are only 20 percent. "With all the fervor against him in the United States right now, he's the equivalent of Saddam Hussein," Cory Scott, operations manager for the website, told the Toronto Sun, referring to the former Iraqi dictator who was executed in 2006. "It seems to us a magazine like Time isn't radical enough to choose him." Assange, 39, was refused bail and remanded in custody Tuesday until Dec. 14 during an extradition hearing at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. The decision followed his arrest by appointment at a London police station on four ...

WikiLeaks and the politics of Interpol
December 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM

Source: www.lankajournal.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
The issuance of an Interpol wanted notice for the Australian founder of WikiLeaks within days after his website began releasing hundreds of thousands of classified United States government cables is blatantly political. Interpol's charter prohibits it from taking up cases that are predominantly political in character, but this has not prevented it from issuing the red [...] ...

Vice President of Bolivia hosting Bolivia-related Wikileaks cables?
December 8, 2010 at 7:09 AM

Source: www.boingboing.net --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
What is this I don't even. It looks like the office of the Vice President of Bolivia is hosting translated versions of WikiLeaks-leaked cables that relate to affairs involving the South American nation. The material is live at WikiLeaks.vicepresidencia.gob.bo . So, ".gob.bo" does look like the official TLD for their government matters; the state bank is even hosted on this domain. Are they translating the material, or are the cables en Español available through other Spanish-language news sources (such as Spain's El País, which was a partner of sorts with WikiLeaks on the embargoed release process)? No sé, hombre. But as my colleague Rob points out, why not Cuba? You'd kind of expect Cuba to get all up in this mirroring bizness. Discuss. ...

4Chan Takes Down 'Mastercard, Swiss Banking, PayPal' and Other Sites in Support of WikiLeaks's Julian Assange
December 8, 2010 at 7:09 AM

Source: www.ditii.com --- Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Following, PayPal's, MasterCard has also pulled the plug on payments to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's account, a move that will dry up another source of funds for the embattled document-sharing Web site, CNET has learned. "MasterCard is taking action to ensure that WikiLeaks can no longer accept MasterCard-branded products," a spokesman for MasterCard Worldwide said today. In retaliation to this, 4Chan's launched distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against PayPal, Swiss bank PostFinance, and other sites that have hindered the whistleblowing site's operations. A self-styled spokesman for the group calling himself "Coldblood" has said that any website that's "bowing down to government pressure" is a target. The attacks are being performed under the Operation Payback , which's organizing its WikiLeaks and Julian Assange support efforts through the @Anon_Operation Twitter account and here . Attacks have also hit Paypal and Swiss bank PostFinance and other sites which have refused service to Assange. EveryDNS.net, Visa as well as Amazon are also possible targets. Assange himself was arrested in London yesterday under allegations of sexual mis-conduct and will be held in custody until December 14th. Bail was refused over fears that he might flee, and also due to some fear that he was at risk from "unstable persons." [ Source ] ...
