North Point Community Church band are embracing the holiday season by using iPads and some apps to spread some festive joy through music. Using iPad apps like iGog, Guitarist and Pocket Organ the band has been able to reproduce some classic Christmas music such as Carol of the Bells, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree and Feliz Navida.  Late Tuesday afternoon, Mr Chiots and I decided to head down to the local tree farm to get our Christmas tree. We went to Williamson Tree Farm on the outskirts of Carrollton, OH. It's a small tree farm, very understated. They don't have horse drawn carriages, nice big barns and all that stuff. They do have great service, great trees and great prices. This was our first year getting a real Christmas tree since we've gotten married. We've had a fake one up until the year before last, we didn't put anything up last year. When I was growing up we always had a fresh tree, we'd often make a trip of heading out to the tree farm to pick our perfect tree. It was a cold day, the temperature was in the low 20's when we left and right around 20 when we arrived home. That didn't stop the tree farm people, they were all bundled up and ready to take you out to choose and cut your perfect tree. We picked out a cute little Frasier fir with lots of character (aka not perfect and straight). We put our tree in the car, which just fit. Then we grabbed a bunch of pine boughs for decorating the stair railing and a few other spots around the house and we were on our way. They let us take as much of this as we wanted for free – a great bonus to shopping at a little tree farm instead of one of the big places! One of things I love about this tree farm is that since it's small, they plant the new trees in the spots in the field where others are cut down.  Jon Knudsen, the pastor of the Løkken Free Church in the Jutland town of Vendsyssel, loves Christmas, but he hates elves. Last weekend, Knudsen's hatred for the creature he says "comes from the devil" manifested itself in the form of a mock execution by hanging of a Christmas elf outside his church. Around the elf's neck was a sign reading "we reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises", a reference to the Christian baptism rite. Knudsen said decorating with elves at Christmas was "comparable to decorating with Nazi flags" , and described elves of all sorts as "poltergeists that come from the devil and make children sick". Although the church's parishioners and some other residents of the town of 1,500 on the North Sea coast supported the protest, others had asked, and even threatened, Knudsen to take the elf down. In one humorous protest, Knudsen said a dozen or so metre-high garden gnomes had been placed outside his home. He said he had also received letters sent by "elves".  Tyla's company had their Christmas party last Friday night. It's a small-ish company so we all hopped into one fantastic party bus and set out on a mystery adventure. We were given clues along the way that included a necktie, fedora, and feather boa. Nobody figured it out exactly, but somebody did yell out "Capitol Hill!" when the boas were handed out and that was actually correct. The first stop was Pike's Place market where we hopped out for a quick picture in front of the sign. That whole area is nicely decorated for Christmas. We ended up at Tavern Law . It used to be a speakeasy but is now a bar that serves the most delicious burgers on earth. It was grass fed beef with red wine onion jam, provolone, and pork belly. Fantastic! When I was a child, " Santa Claus Conquers The Martians " aired annually, right after Thanksgiving, and I couldn't have been happier. First, it signaled that Christmas was near and second, it always gave me a good laugh. It's a corny, offbeat film that has received many low ratings over the years but I cannot help myself, I like it. As an adult, I am sure I like it more for the nostalgia than the actual content, acting, or set design—but as a child, I liked it for the Martians. The plot is simple…Martians have access to Earth television and their children are depressed because they don't have a Santa Claus of their own, they don't have Earth toys, and they don't celebrate Christmas. And they're quite tired of always having to learn and never having any time for "fun". Determined to make their children happy, the Martian leader, Kimar, travels to Earth and kidnaps Santa Claus, along with two Earth children.  What's Going on Today: Putting up the tree! Getting ready for the big JMcLaughlin party this weekend! Tonight's Menu: Take-out, Mom's got some catering to do! Naptime Goals: Make Christmas Pinata cookies for the JMcLaughlin party and some to give to our neighbors. Parenting Lesson of the Day: The mood in here just keeps elevating. I am so incredibly excited about the JMcLaughlin party I can hardly stand it. This is my first catering gig and my very first venture into packaged foods. Will there be more packaged foods and catering to come? Perhaps! (Read: I hope so!) The food I'll be making for the party will be mainly sweet and savory bite-size nibbles. There is no kitchen at the shop and we want customers to be browsing while they eat, not juggling heavy duty hor d'oeuvres and ignoring the pretty clothes. One of the cookies I'll be serving are these sweet Christmas Pinata cookies. My Mom ripped out the recipe from a magazine many moons ago and has made them for us every Christmas since. As you'll see, they are called pinata cookies because of the sweet surprise inside. In this case I use Candy Cane Hershey Kisses and festive M&M's, small sweets that fit well inside the sweet buttery dough. I then froze half to keep until the party next week. The morning of the party I'll frost and decorate them. The other half my daughter and I decorated because I was taking them our neighbors for a quick hello.
