 Less than 10 minutes from my house in Maryland is the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd , a stately placed secured on a wide swath of farmland. If you're up on your American Civil War history, you'll recognize Dr. Mudd as the man who set the leg of John Wilkes Booth , the famous actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. After the president was killed during a performance at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., Booth fled and sought treatment on Mudd's plantation. Did I lose you there? A little too textbook-y for you? Don't worry — I understand. Growing up in Southern Maryland, an area ripe with historical markers on almost every corner, I learned to tune out many of the facts that came flying at me from every angle. But what with my dad now a licensed D.C. tour guide and my mom and boyfriend quite interested in history, I've grown to appreciate it in new ways. Especially since it's all right here . The Dr. Mudd House stands a bit off the road in Waldorf, Md., which happens to be my hometown. For one weekend in December, Mudd's former residence opens to the general public adorned for a Victorian Christmas — looking the way it would have in, say, 1865. Well we get to play the easiest game to date so far, we beat them away and if Braga get a result tonight then we can still top the group (I think). Buying cards for people, whether it be for birthdays, Christmas or some other special occasion, is not something that most of us enjoy doing. It is not that we resent having to spend a few dollars on buying a card for someone, but rather that it always seems to be a last minute rush and we can never find one that matches the messages that we want to give. Buying cards is not something that we can just forget about doing though, so what can we do to make the process a better, more enjoyable one? The best thing that you can do is to get a calendar, hang it in a prominent place (such as in your kitchen or on your bedroom door) and to mark on the dates of all the birthdays throughout the year that you need to send cards for. Also, mark on a date at the end of November that you will buy your Christmas cards and one at the start of December when you will send them off. Keep a pen attached to the calendar too, as you will no doubt need to make additions throughout the year for baby showers, weddings, graduations, etc. With regards to actually going out and buying the cards, it makes sense to buy them in batches; say, three months worth of cards each time. [NB This challenge is only running for ONE WEEK rather than the usual 2 weeks.] For those of you who don't know or who are unsure of what CAS is, it's an acronym for C lean A nd S imple. So what is considered to be a "clean and simple" card? Well, it really is up to you - if you consider your creation to be CAS, then it is! However, here are some 'guidelines' that I have pulled from various CAS challenges on the www of what CAS is accepted to mean: Clean : uncluttered, lots of white or open space. Simple : one clear focal point with little distractions, limited layers, little or no embellishments. Reproducible : can be quickly and easily mass produced. So you now know what CAS is, but where to start? If you're a bit stuck, I suggest popping along to http://cleanandsimplestamping.blogspot.com/ to choose one of their CAS sketches (past or present - there are lots of great ones to choose from!) to follow as a great starting point. Captain & Tennille were a huge music sensation in the late 70s. I remember playing my record of "Love Will Keep Us Together" a zillion times, but for the life of me I do not remember their variety show. So when I saw " The Christmas Show " on Amazon, I just had to buy it. I'll be honest with you, I MISS variety shows. I miss shows that showcased talent without crude jokes and sexual innuendos. I miss slapstick comedy. I miss seeing so many talented people in one place. And I miss themed holiday specials that left you feeling good. Still, I wasn't sure what I thought about this show when I first watched it. Daryl Dragon, a.k.a. The Captain, is a bit dull. The man has talent but he seems so uncomfortable in front of the camera; so flat. But after watching the show again this year, I can see its charm. I enjoyed the musical numbers with The Pointer Sisters, Tennille's sisters, and of course, the pop duo, Captain & Tennille. They sang songs like "Little St. Nick", "Jingle Bells", "I'm Saved", "Count Basie Medley", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", and "Oh, Holy Night". The sets were all decked out in holiday cheer, the costumes were festive and the dance numbers were fun. Even the skits with Don Knotts and Tom Bosley were cute. I had forgotten how beautifully Toni Tennille sang. I forgot how deep and rich and versatile her voice was. It was, for me, a real treat to hear her sing again.
