Our Consular team in Lyon, Chantal, Jeanie, Nicola. From the moment the final school bell rings on the last day of term before Christmas, and until around Easter time, some 700,000 of you will be heading for an alpine holiday, leaving hard work, dismal skies and budget restrictions behind you for a while. This is the beginning of our busiest time at the British Consulate, Lyon. Although less than 1% of you will get into some sort of trouble and ask for help, this is still a lot of people. Problems range from lost passports (of which there are an inordinate amount), arrests, hospitalisations and fatal accidents. My favorite holiday DIY project for this year is these happy yarn Christmas trees. They're fun, lively and simple and they can be made using any sort of extra scraps from your crafting or gift-wrapping stash. This is all that you'll need to make these sweet trees: styrofoam or floral oasis cones yarn in the colors of your choice ribbon in the colors of your choice paper and pencil and scissors glue small items to use as tree toppers The best thing about this project is that the styrofoam cones were the only item I really had to buy. I was lucky enough to stumble across these cones at a discount store last month, but you can often find them on sale in the floral supply section of a craft store or even at Wal-Mart or Target. With all the normal expenses of the holidays, you gotta love an el cheapo craft project! First you'll trace a circle the to fit the bottom of the cones and then glue them on as protective bases. That will prevent the styrofoam or oasis from flaking off so you can enjoy your trees for many a year. I used leftover Xmas scrapbook paper but you can use gift wrap or just plain letter paper. Apply a ring of glue around the base of the cone and press the yarn to it. Wait a couple of minutes for it to start drying and then begin wrapping the yarn in circles around the circumference of the cone. P.s. your fingers will get gluey. It's cool. Unfortunately lucky for him , Mr. Weasel was unable to attend this year due to a previous commitment. That left me to feed, dress, supervise homework and get 4 out of 5 Weasels back to school by 6 pm. Yay Me! Surprisingly, we made it out of the door and arrived at school right on time without too much ado. I walked Smallest Weasel to her classroom and headed to the the gym to find a seat in the sea of parents, most of whom had obviously never gone home after school dismissal in favor of ensuring themselves seating in the same time zone as the pageant was to take place. I on the other hand may as well have been in the Presidential Inaugural crowd of Uncle Barry. I took a single seat approximately 4 miles from the stage, right next to a joyous little 4 year old by the name of Julio (Julie-O). Right away, I was welcomed with a great big and friendly "Hi!". I still had half of an hour to kill before showtime and my mind started to wander as I contemplated the enjoyment that I would extract from the upcoming performance. I thought to myself, "Ya know, with this seating, I could really sneak out the back door and have time to grab a couple of drinks and something to snack on, be back in time for the finale and the Weasels would never be the wiser". Electronic Arts has confirmed that a demo for Dead Space 2 will be released on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in time for Christmas, because apparently some of the time to be jolly should be spent dismembering monsters in space. Take it as you will, the demo will be out on December 21 in North America and a day later in Europe. The official word is that the demo will allow players to gain "access to a variety of new tools that Isaac can use to fight Necromorphs, including the new Javelin gun, updated stasis recharge mechanic and enhanced telekinesis ability." The press release confirms that players will "also experience the advanced suit, equipped with jets that will allow Isaac full 3600 control in Zero-G space." Whew! We're coming down the home stretch, Friends. Christmas is just around the corner. I'm SO not ready. But I do manage to keep baking away. I've got three cookies to share with you for week 11 of Twelve Weeks of Christmas Cookies. First up—Soft Nutella Peanut Butter Cookies. I made these cookies once last year after my pal, Amanda from Amanda's Cookin' blogged about them. They were a big hit when I made them for a Christmas party. Amanda had mentioned wanted to try the cookies with a little more Nutella than she'd used, so I went for it and made them with half a cup of Nutella instead of the one-quarter cup she'd used. I can't find my notes from last year, but I know I also added some chopped hazelnuts then. These cookies really are soft and chewy and I plan to try them with just peanut butter as Amanda mentioned this was the recipe she has used and loved for peanut butter cookies for years. I made the cookies again last week and they were just as good, though I didn't add the chopped hazelnuts this time. Check out the link for the cookies on Amanda's Cookin' for the recipe. My only change was like I mentioned I added 1/2 cup Nutella and only 1/4 cup peanut butter. The first two photos were from the cookies I made last year. Here's the latest.  The snow came early this year. Just as the 25 days of the Christmas season had begun Kentucky got a blanket of white. More than usual I'm in the Christmas spirit this year. However, too many of us will sit in jail this Christmas. Worse, some will sit in jail even though they will later be found innocent of the charges. I have followed the original arrest, subsequent hearings, blogs, and further arrests and hearings of Pleas Lucian Kavanaugh. Most recently his bond was revoked and he was ordered to jail until his court date on February 23d. Pleas will spend Christmas in jail for exercising his First Amendment right to voice his case and his concerns over his ongoing police harassment. It's Christmas in jail when they deny your bail. Every time I look at my Christmas tree and work on decorating the house I can't help but thinking about Pleas. Pleas is a good man, an innocent man. Pleas has friends and family who are missing him right now. Stress and worry dominate their lives during a time meant for peace and love. Pleas does not deserve to be punished for blogging about his situation. Prosecutor Gullette didn't like what Mr. Kavanaugh was saying and called a hearing on December 16th to do just that. The classic holiday tradition kicked off the Christmas 2010 shopping season, allowing stars to greet their fans on Hollywood Blvd with marching bands, live performances and character balloons. Hollywood, CA, December 10, 2010 — From the Heart of Hollywood, starting at Hollywood Blvd and Orange, the Hollywood Santa Christmas Parade was greeted by over fifty thousand fans cheering celebrities like Erik Estrada, Laura McKenzie, Donna Mills, Dick Van Dyke, Corbin Bernsen, Susan Sullivan, Rip Taylor, Vivica Fox, Kevin Eubanks and Stephanie Powers. ((originally published in Dec 2007)) It's funny how some Christmas memories fade and some endure, especially when it comes to gifts. We weren't poor but we weren't exactly well off either when I was young. Santa's gifts were often determined by budget concerns but he always managed to leave us clothes and some toys. (although one year I got a note with the other gifts: "Dear Bill, I owe you one telescope. Santa Claus") Ads for a forthcoming movie brought back more memories. One Christmas Eve my sister and I could hear Alvin and the Chipmunks "Christmas Song" play over and over while our parents laughed. When we asked why the song kept playing we were told it was the radio and to get to sleep before Santa came. (of course by now I already knew the Awful Truth). It turned out Santa had left us a portable record player along with a copy of the record! I still have the gift my sister gave me one year: a wooden chess set, the kind that doubles as a box to hold the chessmen. It's over thirty years old now. As I grew older I learned that giving gifts was as much fun as getting them. We didn't have a color tv so one year when I was working at the toy warehouse I put a portable Magnavox color tv on layaway and gave it to my folks for Christmas. That tv lasted for years, even after my folks got a larger console set.
