My company's HR department is encouraging employees to take part in a program to buy toys for less fortunate children. My only problem with it is the requirement that all toys be purchased new. My own experience with my family over the years tells me that there is a huge glut of perfectly good slightly used toys available. My family have thrown out thousands of toys, many of which were still new-looking, but there was simply couldn't find anyone who wanted them. They couldn't be sold at garage sales or even given away at these sales. We often threw them away just to create room in our home. From what I saw of friends' homes, they could have improved their lives by throwing away more toys. This whole charity effort has the feel of something designed to pump up toy sales. I have no idea if this is really the case, but adding to the glut of toys choking the homes of families rubs me the wrong way. I would prefer to see needy children paired up with some of the almost new but unwanted toys in wealthier homes.  AT a cost of around $4,000 (postage and packing not included), Bill Donohue's dotty Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has sent nativity scenes to each of America's 50 state governors in the hope that they will be displayed in government spaces. News of the initiative serendipitously came just after we, at the Freethinker , were emailed the nativity scene below, which prompted much mirth – and it made us wonder which Governors would have the balls to doctor their gifts in an act of homage to the Flying Spaghetti Monster . In a letter last month, the Catholic League told governors and their chiefs of staff that the nativities were on their way and suggested they be displayed in capitol rotundas. The tacky15.5 inch crèches cost $80 each, with funding coming from an appeal to Catholic League members. The League, which Donohue admits gets involved in the so-called Christmas wars every year, has in the past sent out Christmas decals and pressed department stores to refer to merry Christmases – not just happy holidays. Doug Laycock, a law professor at the University of Virginia who specialises in religious liberty issues, says that the Supreme Court has ruled that the government's ability to display religious symbols like nativity scenes depends on the setting.  " This Christmas " was billed as a family film and a comedy. I, however, feel that it's more of an adult film due to the mature content. It's about a family, known as the Whitfields, who return to their mother's home a few days before Christmas to share in the holiday festivities—only their personal drama follows them and has the potential to ruin the holidays and quite possibly the ties that bind the family together. There's a lot of talk about the sexual relationships of various family members, there's a wayward son who returns home simply to hide from some goons he owns money to, there's a short-tempered son who not only goes AWOL but pulls a gun on a man for disrespecting his woman, there's a son-in-law determined to break up the family business so that he can advance his career, and there's a daughter who stays in a bad relationship because she doesn't believe she has anything else to offer the world and then when she "gets a clue" she beats him with a belt. Truth-be-told, with all the craziness that pursues, it could have easily become the next " Home Alone " but because the director and screen writers kept the film on a more serious note it doesn't even come close to being a comedy. Monthly BRC survey shows retail sales up 0.7% in November on a year ago but internet, phone and mail-order sales jump Retail sales climbed during November but shops still face a difficult Christmas as snow and plunging temperatures add to shoppers' worries about rising unemployment and the state of the economy. A monthly survey by the British Retail Consortium and accountants KPMG found sales moved up 0.7% on a like-for-like basis from November 2009. The BRC said that while clothing and footwear sales gathered pace, non-food sales overall remained sluggish and recorded a downturn on a like-for-like basis. Much of the growth in food sales could be accounted for by inflation resulting from higher commodity prices, especially wheat. A spokesman for the BRC said: "It's been another tough month. Total sales growth has been weak now for eight months in a row and, given that VAT has pushed up annual inflation boosting sales values, underlying volume growth is virtually zero. Customers are cutting back because they're worried about prospects for their own jobs and personal finances." Internet sales proved more resilient with shoppers placing orders ahead of an expected surge of buying away from the high street, in part to beat the weather.
